Sunday 8th February 2009 marked the 50th Anniversary of the marriage of Salvu Mercieca and Mananni nee' Spiteri of Srug Street, Xaghra. To celebrate the Golden Jubilee of their married life, they chose Saint Anthony the Abbot Church where Thanksgiving Mass was celebrated. The celebrant, Canon John Sultana, whose sister Guza is the couple’s daughter in law, was assisted by Canon George Farrugia. Readings and Prayers of the Faithful were read by eight of their grandchildren. After the Homily, Salvu and Mananni renewed their marriage vows and once more, after fifty years, they went through the ritual of marriage exchanging wedding rings. As a sign of gratitude, Salvu and Mananni's six children presented them with a beautiful Greek icon of the Holy Family. The offerings were brought to the altar by the fifty year wedded couple’s children, Klara, Guzeppi and Kelinu, Karmenu, Vitor and Toni. Many relatives of Salvu and Mananni turned up for this memorable occasion and celebration of Thanksgiving. All the Mercieca family afterwards attended a very different wedding reception from that of fifty years ago. That time it was a simple but lovely reception at the home of the bride's sister, Lucia, that Salvu and Mananni vividly remember! Lunch in a local restaurant was never on the couple’s agenda fifty years ago. They never dreamt of ever bieng called to cut a second wedding cake quite different from that of fifty years earlier. But more than the lunch and the cake, most enjoyable was the presence of their children, all of whom obviously were not present on their wedding day! All God’s Blessings and best of health to Salvu and Mananni – Ad Multos Annos! Photos are courtesy of Cordina Photo Studio.Rating 3.5 (4 votes)
