The feast of St Joseph the Worker is universally celebrated by the Catholic Church. In Xaghra extra emphasis is laid to it as St Joseph is the Co Patron of the Parish whose feast is celebrated annually on the First Sunday in May. It so happened that this year the feast of St Joseph the Worker fell on the third day of Triduum preceding the latter feast. Mgr Carmelo Refalo was the principal celebrant at Mass. The Hon Can Mario Borg gave the last of his three homilies in praise of the Saint. This last one was greeted with merited great applause as Can Borg vividly exhibited the virtues of Saint Joseph both as a worker and as a head of the family. Besides the usual Mass Offerings, men and women went up with various objects and tools. There were ladies with handcrafts, lace, kitchen utensils, a nurse with medical equipment, and men among whom farmers, a butcher, a builder, a carpenter and a catechist with the Bible. All the tools and articles presented were placed at the foot of the High Altar until the end of Mass. The ever present Choir Voci Angeliche directed by choir Mistress Ms Grace Vella accompanied on the organ by its Musical Director Mr Ronald Camilleri animated the singing while Ms Theresa Theuma animated Mass. In the end, the Rev Deacon Joseph Curmi imparted benediction with the Holy Eucharist. Meantime the statue of St Joseph was standing near the pulpit decorated with several beautiful flower arrangements. Exhibited on one side of the statue were two pieces of artistic ganutel works, one a bouquet of which there will be four and another a garland which will decorate the statue in future. These works are by Ms Maria Sultana and Ms Tanya Theuma respectively. Both are to be congratulated for the exquisitely high and professional standard they achieved. Not yet rated
