On 28th April 1688 Xaghra became a Parish, the medieval Church of St Anthony the Abbot served as the first parish church. The historical event is celebrated every year on the day in the Basilica but at St Anthony the Abbot Church it celebrated later and this year this took place on Sunday 13th May. Forty hours of adoration started on Friday with solemn celebration of the Holy Eucharist followed by procession being held on Sunday. Xaghra Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo was the principal celebrant with the Rector, Can John Sultana, his deputy Can John Bartolo and Fr Ugolin Xerri Ofm Conv co celebrating. Fr Xerri was the preacher during Mass the previous two days. Four singers directed by Miss Diana Teuma accompanied by Mr Marvic Gauci on the organ sang at Mass.
