Friday preceding Good Friday every year is the day dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows; a day of great devotion celebrated all over the Maltese Islands.Xaghra Parish joined in the celebrations, this year taking place on Friday 30th March. The devout statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, id-Duluri, was carried through various streets in the housing estate passing by the Ta` Kola Windmill and the world renowned Neolithic Temples of Ggantija.
It was led by the Victory Band playing funereal marches in front of the statue which was followed by the Collegiate Chapter and Clergy, with Archpriest Mgr. Carmelo Refalo bringing up the rear carrying the relic of the Madonna. A large crowd, making up a very high percentage of the village population representing people from all walks of life followed in manifest devotion. Solemn Concelebrated Mass followed in the Basilica.
However, the day`s ceremonies started in the morning with Mass for schoolchildren attending Patri Mattew Sultana Primary School at 9.00 a.m. Mass being said at the school. Mass in the Basilica for students of MCAST Xaghra and Xewkija was said at 10.00 a.m.
