The Ghaqda ‘Il-Milied fix-Xaghra’ (Society ‘Christmas in Xaghra’) organised its sixth annual seminar on the tradition of the Nativity Scene on Sunday 11th of November, 2012 at 9.30am. The seminar was held at the Xaghra Youth Centre. Crib artisan Victor Darmanin from Kalkara was this year’ lecturer. Mr Darmanin demonstrated how to build a crib in cork. His presentation was most interesting and the great number of those attending followed with great interest. There was a short interval during which Victor Agius, the Society’s President, gave a visual on screen presentation about the historic Nativity of Arnolfo di Cambio of Santa Maria Maggiore of Rome dating way back to 1289. An informative handout about various designs and studies about the biblical style of crib building and information about the biblical archaeology and architecture at the time of Christ’s birth was given to the participants. This year, the Society is celebrating its 8th anniversary having been fouded in 2004. The Society’s main aim is to promote and coordinate the many celebrations related to Christmas in Xaghra and to see that cultural, religious and folkloristic Christmas traditions are encouraged and promoted to preserve our heritage and identity. This year, twenty one mechanical and static artistic cribs together with a Live Nativity Scene will be on show in Xaghra including two large baroque cribs crafted in Naples. The Live Nativity Scene, housed in a rustic farmhouse and raised by the Guiding Light, a Youth Group from Nazzarenu is the twelfth uninterrupted edition of this presentation. For the benefit of visitors and tourists, a tour of all these cribs “Xaghra Cribs By Night” will be conducted on Saturday 29th December starting at 16h30 from near Ggantija Temples where cars can be left parked and the visitors taken around the town by coach. Visitors will be entertained to traditional freshly brewed coffee and village biskuttini. On view will be also a Christmas Crafts Exhibition and a Photographic Exhibition of past Christmas festivities. The triumphal entry of the Magi known as Cavalcata Dei Re Magi will be held on 6th January 2013. This will take place on Victory Square at 10h15. Every year this activity attracts hundreds of visitors. For more information and booking please email miliedxaghra@gmail.com
