Friday, 7th June 2013, was a Red Letter day for Xaghra as a red carpet, laid on the parvis, awaited the arrival of His Eminence Cardinal Prospero Grech. Accompanied by Can. John Sultana in his car, His Eminence arrived at 7.00 p.m. clad in his Cardinal's red attire. He was welcomed by Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo and the Collegiate Chapter and Clergy. His Eminence was invited to Xaghra to lead the Concelebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His Eminence walked to the Basilica passing through a Guard of Honour provided by the Xaghra Scout Group. Inside the Basilica he was greeted with applause by the Congregartion packing the Church. Walking up the nave His Eminence sprinkled Holy Water on the Congregation. At the head of the Congregation, he was greeted by Xaghra Mayor, Mr Joseph Cordina and Local Councillors and The Police Superintendent for Gozo who were leading the Congregation. His Eminence then went to the Chapel of the Holy Eucharist where he knelt in prayer. Back among the Congregation he met children who had received their First Holy Communion on Sunday 26th May. Group photos were then taken of him with the Collegiate Chapter, the three Confraternities and Altar Boys of Nazzarenu and St Anthony the Abbot Churches and the Basilica. Afterwards His Eminence was the principal Celebrant at Mass with the Chapter and Clergy, led by Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo, concelebrating.
