For the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday 27th June 2014, the Parish of Xaghra had the pleasure to welcome H.L. Mgr Emanuel Barbara O.F.M. Cap., Maltese Bishop of the Diocese of Malindi in Kenya. His Lordship presided over the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Maria Bambina Basilica in the evening with members of the Chapter and Clergy of Xaghra led by Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo co celebrating with him. Animating the singing was the Parish Choir Voci Angeliche directed by Ms Grace Vella accompanied on the organ by organist Mr Ivan Attard. Mr Joseph Refalo animated Mass.
After Mass, procession with the Holy Eucharist passed through the streets in the area of the World renowned Ggantija Neolithic Temples. Children who this year received their First Holy Communion accompanied the procession marching in front of the Blessed Sacrament decorating the streets showering coloured flower petals. A large crowd of faithful followed the procession reciting the Rosary and singing hymns. Near the Ta' Kola Windmill, in front of the Monument dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, renewal of the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus of the families of Xaghra followed by benediction with the Blessed Sacrament. After the procession, back in the Basilica, Bishop Mgr Barbara again delivered benediction with the Holy Eucharist. A generous collection during Mass was donated to Mgr Barbara's Mission in Malindi.
Born on 27th October 1949 in Gzira Malta and consecrated priest on 20 July 1974, Mgr Emanuel Barbara O.F.M. Cap. serves as the Bishop of the Diocese of Malindi after being so appointed in October 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI. Last year His Holiness Pope Francis also appointed him as Apostolic Administrator of Mombasa in Kenya after the resignation of Archbishop Mgr Boniface Lele. We wish Mgr Barbara Ad Multos Annos and many more fruitful years in his mission in the service of the Lord.
