SimulaCra. Hundred years of a procession.
An exhibition held by the Xaghra Parish to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the arrival of a set of artistic and devotional statues representing the passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, on Saturday 28th February 1914. These simulacra (Latin for statues) where sculpted by Luigi Guacci in Lecce, Italy; and have since been carried every year in procession on Good Friday.
Along the years, the procession evolved from one which was mainly penitential - with men dragging chains and children carrying lamps; to today's pageantry form - with over 200 people wearing costumes to represent biblical figures associated to Christ's passion.
SIMULACRA will be an added feature to this year's Good Friday Procession, and will give you the opportunity to go through a hundred years of prayerful following of the Crucified.
The Exhibition is at the end of Victory Square, near the stone cross there.
It was opened by the Parish Vicar, Fr Joseph Bajada, who was in charge of its raising assisted by Deacon Daniel Sultana and blessed by Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo on Saturday 12th April in the presence of Archpriest Emeritus Mgr Eucharistic Sultana.
