Mgr Daniel Xerri of Xaghra was installed Archpriest of Xewkija Parish on 8th November 2015. At 14:15, a motorcade from Xewkija led Fr Daniel from his home in Nazzarenu to Victory Square in Xaghra. On the Church parvis he was welcomed by the Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo, Archpriest Emeritus Mgr Eucharist Sultana and members of the Collegiate Chapter and Clergy of the Parish. On entering the Basilica, Fr Daniel went to the Baptistry where he was baptised in 1969 and sprinkled Holy Water on the gathered congregation. After praying in front of the High Altar, he was addressed by Mgr Archpriest to which he replied. He proceeded to the niche of Maria Bambina and after the singing of the Salve Regina he placed a bouquet of flowers in front of the image there. The Xaghra Piccolo Clero presented him with a gift consisting of a chasuble.Then he continued his journey to Xewkija accompanied by a big motorcade. In Xewkija he was welcomed by his predecessor, Archpriest Emeritus Mgr Carmelo Mercieca and Xewkija Mayor Mr Paul Azzopardi. The Precursor and Victory Bands of Xewkija and Xaghra respectively, led the cortege to St John the Baptist Square playing marches. Waiting there was His Lordship Mgr Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo. Welcome speeches were made on behalf of the people of Xewkija and the Xewkija Local Council. Then Bishop and New Archpriest moved to the Rotunda, Mgr Xerri opening the door to enter the Church and start the religious ceremony.
