It was a moving scene seeing schoolchildren from Patri Mattew Sultana School happily going to the Basilica each one carrying flowers to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo celebrated the Holy Eucharist for them starting at 9.30 a.m. The Lessons and the Psalms were read by the School Headmaster Mr Joseph Rapa and Assistant Head Ms M. Ann Zammit respectively. Two very young girls playing guitars animated the singing. The homily took the form of questions put to the children by the Archpriest regarding the day`s feast and the coming Holy Week celebrations. The children were quick in replying correctly, showing that they were well versed in the program and all that it meant. Five children went up to the ambone and read the Prayers of the Faithful. Prior to making the offerings, many others lined up to the Archpriest offering bouquets of flowers which he placed at the foot of the High Altar. The very young ones attending kinder and pre kinder classes showed enthusiasm when their turn arrived for them to present the flowers to Archpriest Refalo. With excellently bright weather for the day, the evening`s devout procession with the statue of our Lady of Sorrows will draw the crowds as will happen in every town and village in the Maltese islands where processions take place. Meantime a large attractive canvas with picture of Holy Week celebrations hangs at tal-Qacca, the gateway to Xaghra.
